What Is Structured Cabling?
The Backbone of Your Business Network
Structured cabling is a standardized approach to designing and installing a building's entire cabling infrastructure. Rather than running cables ad hoc as needs arise, structured cabling creates an organized, hierarchical system that connects all your technology — data networks, phone systems, security cameras, and access controls — through a single, unified framework.
Think of it as the highway system for your building's data. Properly designed structured cabling means faster speeds, fewer outages, easier troubleshooting, and the ability to scale without tearing out and replacing what's already there.
Whether you're building out a new office, retrofitting an existing space, or expanding a warehouse, investing in properly designed and installed cabling pays dividends for years to come.

Cat5e vs. Cat6 vs. Cat6A: Which Cable Do You Need?
Not all Ethernet cable is created equal. Here's how the three most common categories compare — and which one Wire-It recommends for 2026 installations.
| Specification | Cat5e | Cat6 | Cat6A |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max Speed | 1 Gbps | 10 Gbps (up to 55m) | 10 Gbps (full 100m) Best |
| Bandwidth | 100 MHz | 250 MHz | 500 MHz |
| Max Distance (at rated speed) | 100m | 55m at 10G / 100m at 1G | 100m at 10G |
| PoE Support | PoE (15.4W) | PoE+ (30W) | PoE++ (up to 90W) |
| Crosstalk Protection | Basic | Improved (internal spline) | Superior (shielded pairs) |
| Future-Proof Rating | Legacy — being phased out | Good for 3–5 years | 10+ years Recommended |
| Best For | Basic internet, VoIP | Office networks, short runs | Enterprise, cameras, Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs |
Small Office / Budget
Cat6 is the minimum we install in 2026. It handles everyday office traffic, VoIP phones, and standard PoE devices at a lower cost than Cat6A.
New Construction / Remodel
Cat6A is the clear winner. Pulling cable through walls is the expensive part — the cable cost difference is minor compared to the labor savings of not re-pulling in 5 years.
Cameras, APs & PoE Devices
Cat6A's 90W PoE++ support powers high-draw devices like PTZ cameras, Wi-Fi 7 access points, and PoE lighting without separate power runs.
Wire-It's Recommendation: Cat6A is the 2026 baseline for any new install. It delivers 10 Gbps at full distance, supports next-gen PoE, and won't need replacing when your network demands grow. We no longer install Cat5e in new projects.
